BC Coalition for Action on Alcohol Reform
The BC Coalition for Action on Alcohol Reform advocates on behalf of the residents of British Columbia to reduce the social and economic harms of alcohol abuse in the province.
Alcohol, without exception, is the substance that poses greatest risk of harm to the people of our municipalities. We are drinking more and it is also costing us more, not only as far as dollars are concerned for policing and health care, but also an enormous human cost including domestic abuse, violent assault, risky sexual behaviour, accidental death, homicide and suicide.
We are recommending that the government targets problematic cheap, high-strength alcoholic products for price increases. Our current pricing policies are putting our most vulnerable populations at risk because they are considerably cheaper than low-strength alcohol products.
The price of getthing high, stoned and drunk in BC, is a report issued by the Centre for Addictions Research of BC in December 2010 calls for ending rock bottom drink prices to address the continuing connection between cheap alcohol, death and hosptialization in BC.
"British Columbia needs to stop allowing the alcohol industry to market high-powered cheap drinks to young people and alcoholics." Read more...
"Alcohol abuse carries a high cost, affecting everything from relationships to health to crime... With that in mind the provincial government should ensure that more potent drinks carry a stiffer price." Read more...
"Civic leaders join push for booze price reform." Read more...
Pricing policies must be guided by principles that minimize harm and promote as well as protect public health and safety.
